A little while ago I was invited by Carnelian At The Rock in Design Quarter for dinner, drinks and live music.
I have eaten at The Rock many times and never been disappointed by a meal so I was not going to pass on this wonderful opportunity.
As we arrived for our date night, we were greeted by the lovely Themba. He was eager to help, and suggest which Tapas plate was the best. The gin kept flowing, and as a gin lover, I was not complaining and Themba was very attentive to notice when we needed a top up.
I am quite a fussy eater, but Themba was more than happy to accommodate my difficult taste buds. Nothing was too much trouble for this lovely man.
The live music began, and it was very different to what we are used to in Johannesburg. The live music was provided by Cape Town duo Tim and Luca. This duo comprises of violinist Luca, and synth player and saxophonist Tim. Their set started off a little bit far from my personal taste, but warmed up as they continued to play however my partner thoroughly enjoyed their entire set. I personally loved their original music and we both really enjoyed their electronic swing set. They were the perfect accompaniment to a wonderful and romantic evening. They really set a refreshing ambient atmosphere for the evening.
Our Mediterranean tapa's platter arrived and it was delicious. I could not get enough of the hummus,
pita bread and calamari. The calamari was specifically flavourful. We ordered halloumi, and initially we thought it didn't arrive as what we thought were fish cakes, were actually the fried halloumi. Overall, the meal was delicious and I'm not just being biased as tapas are my favourite way to eat. I love food, and love eating a variety at a time so this option suits me perfectly - less decisions to be made. I get such FOMO when it comes to food.
After dinner, as full as I was, I had one look at their dessert menu, and with the many tasty looking options I couldn't leave without a little taste (Or big taste - whose counting). I had the pleasure of enjoying their Chicago Vaflaki, which is twelve freshly baked mini waffles served with one scoop of homemade chocolate gelato, milk chocolate praline, whipped cream and caramel sauce. I added some strawberries. I can't remember when last I had a dessert as delicious, decadent and satisfying as this.
All in all, the evening was so wonderful. Throughout the meal, the various restaurant staff were so lovely and attentive. I felt right at home at The Rock. The decor, lighting and layout of this contemporary restaurant is beautifully elegant.
I am especially excited to try the Cheese and Charcuterie Board, as well as the Macaroni and Cheese cake. So yes, I will be returning to The Rock very very soon. (I may or may not have returned already).
If you re looking at treating yourself to a tapas platter at The Rock, I would suggest platter number 5.
Thank you The Rock for such a wonderful evening, with incredible food and service. You are definitely a fav, when it comes to Johannesburg restaurants.
